This community driven radio initiative is part of the SSHRC funded Nunalijjuaq action research project for which I am Principal Investigator. In collaboration with Montreal Inuit community members, the Cabot Square Project and CKUT90.3FM, this project produces and broadcasts a bi-weekly Inuktitut language radio program in Montreal while evaluating its sustainability for the long term. The show called ᓂᐱᕗᑦ or Nipivut (‘Our Voice’) aired its first show on Oct 6 2015. You can listen to that first show here or scroll down to the list of shows below. From what we understand, this is the first time an Inuktitut language program is being broadcast in a southern city.
The principal goal of the radio show is to help build an inclusive Inuit community by disseminating essential information to the Inuit in the greater Montreal area. It also aims to provide a voice for Inuit in the Montreal community. Listeners are encouraged to continue the conversations and debates inspired by the show through the use of social media.
The radio program promotes the Inuktitut language in Montreal and provides a forum for Inuit to publicly discuss community life and issues in the city. This initiative also raises the profile of Inuit among the non-Inuit community in Montreal; creating a positive outlet for cultural awareness in the city. Through the use of live broadcasts, podcasts and the on-line archiving of the shows, this project seeks to use radio as a means of connecting Inuit living in the south with their families and friends in the North.

SHOW#25 – September 6 2016 – Here’s Episode 25 of Nipivut! On this show you’ll hear Annie talk with a few women who went to Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada’s engagement session last week at the Native Friendship Centre. We were at the unveiling of a massive mural at 2360 rue Ontario made by Cape Dorset youth last month, which was made with the help of MU and Embassy of Imagination. And we were at The Cabot Square Project/Projet Square Cabot’s Indigenous Friday’s summer closing party, so you’ll hear some live music by Saali & The Ravenhearts and Geronimo Inutiq, and a few conversations Akenisie had with Inuit at the park. All that, and we’re launching a new segment tonight called ‘Messages from the Mayors’ where the Nunavik mayors leave messages of support for students and all Inuit of Montreal. This show was hosted by Annie Pisuktie and made with the help of Akeeshoo Saata, Akenisie Qumak and David Murphy.
SHOW#24 – August 23 2016 – This is our special Kangirsuk episode! This past July, Pauyungie Nutaraaluk worked with Neevie Simigak, a high school student in Kangirsuk, Nunavik, to produce a show about Kangirsuk’s Arctic Char Music Festival! The show features interviews with Kangirsumiut and festival musicians, including live performances by Elisapie Isaac, Twin Flames, and Saali & The Ravenhearts. SHOW#18 – May 31 2016 – This week Annie Pisuktie is back hosting. She interviews Piita Irniq about his recent trip to Nunavik and Nunavut. Alethea Arnaquq-Baril is back on the show too, talking about her new documentary, Angry Inuk, which just won the audience choice award at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. Annie also speaks to Sarah Maniapik about winning 40 First Air tickets and how she’s giving them away. And we’re airing the first part of Annie’s interview with National Inuit Youth Council president Maatalii Aneraq Okalik. Part two will be aired in two weeks time.

SHOW#11 – Feb 23 2016 – This broadcast was a special live event for the national 13th Annual Homelessness Marathon broadcast from outside the Native Friendship Centre on Tuesday, February 23rd. We welcomed guests to come speak freely on the microphone and had performances by Charlie Tumiq. This show is entirely in Inuktitut and was broadcast in different cities from coast to coast via community radio stations across Canada.

We covered the digital storytelling project Inuusik, a partnership with Ivirtivik, Concordia University, and a team of Inuit researchers who made a series of videos about life in Montreal. We also talked about the urban Inuit strategy meeting held in Ottawa this October and spoke with Angus Anderson and Daryl Day.
